The Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 is designed for runners, cyclists, and fitness enthusiasts who want to enjoy music without losing awareness of their surroundings. Unlike conventional earbuds, these headphones leave the ear canals completely unobstructed, allowing environmental sounds to remain audible. Their biggest improvement over previous generations is DualPitch technology, which combines bone and air conduction to address one of the category's longstanding weaknesses: limited bass response.

Design and Comfort

Weighing approximately 30 grams, the OpenRun Pro 2 uses a flexible nickel-titanium frame coated in silicone. The wraparound design positions the transducers against the cheekbones, while the rear band keeps everything secure during movement. Standard and Mini sizes accommodate different head shapes, although choosing the correct band length matters for comfort.

The lightweight construction and stable fit make these headphones particularly suitable for running and extended workouts. They also work comfortably alongside most glasses. However, the rear band can interfere with headrests or shift when performing exercises such as bench presses.

Physical controls are distributed across both sides. A multifunction button handles playback and calls, while dedicated power and volume buttons provide straightforward adjustments. The buttons are generally practical, although their small size makes them difficult to locate while wearing thick gloves.

An IP55 rating protects against dust, sweat, and splashes, making the headphones suitable for rainy runs but not swimming. Charging now uses USB-C instead of a proprietary connector, a welcome improvement in everyday convenience. A compact hard case provides protection during transport.

Sound Quality

Audio performance is where the OpenRun Pro 2 makes its strongest case.

Its DualPitch system assigns midrange and higher frequencies to bone-conduction transducers while dedicated 18 x 11mm air-conduction drivers reproduce bass. This hybrid arrangement produces noticeably fuller low frequencies than traditional bone-conduction designs while substantially reducing the cheekbone vibrations that can become distracting at higher volumes.

Music sounds more balanced and engaging, with clearer separation between vocals and bass instruments. Nevertheless, these headphones cannot reproduce the deep, physical sub-bass of sealed in-ear models. Bass-heavy tracks expose that limitation, particularly when compared directly with conventional earbuds.

The open design also introduces unavoidable environmental compromises. Traffic and other loud surroundings can overwhelm playback, especially at lower listening volumes. Conversely, some sound leakage remains noticeable in quiet spaces.

There is no active noise cancellation or passive isolation, but that is intentional. Environmental awareness is the central benefit, not an incidental feature.

The companion app offers four sound presets and a customizable five-band equalizer, providing useful flexibility without fundamentally changing the acoustic limitations.

Connectivity and Battery Life

Bluetooth 5.3 provides reliable everyday connectivity, although codec support is limited to SBC. There is no AAC or high-resolution audio support, and Google Fast Pair is absent.

Multipoint connectivity allows pairing with two devices, making transitions between a phone and computer more convenient.

Dual microphones deliver clear speech in moderate conditions, supported by noise-reduction processing. Strong wind, however, can still interfere with call clarity.

Battery life is rated at up to 12 hours. Outdoor workout testing at higher volumes produced approximately 10–11 hours, a respectable result given the open-ear design. A five-minute USB-C charge provides up to 2.5 hours of playback, while a complete recharge takes approximately one hour.

Verdict

The Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 represents a meaningful improvement in open-ear sports headphones. Its stronger bass, reduced vibrations, secure fit, and convenient charging make it especially appealing for runners and outdoor exercisers who prioritize situational awareness.

However, listeners seeking powerful sub-bass, isolation from traffic, or immersive listening in noisy environments should choose conventional sealed earbuds instead.

For athletes who want music without disconnecting from their surroundings, the OpenRun Pro 2 is a compelling choice, with compromises that are largely inherent to its open-ear design.
