Apple AirPods Pro 3 Review: Strong ANC, Fit Still Matters

Improved noise cancellation and workout heart-rate sensing make a case for iPhone users, with caveats around fit, bass balance and translation.

Apple's AirPods Pro 3 are premium wireless earbuds for iPhone owners who want strong noise cancellation and workout heart-rate tracking in a pocketable pair. Launched at $249 in the US, they retain Apple's white stems and H2 processing while changing the fit and adding fitness sensors. They make the most sense alongside compatible Apple hardware; Android playback works, but much of the software value disappears.

Ear-tip fit and noise cancellation

The reshaped housings sit deeper in the ear, with five tip sizes from XXS to L. Their foam-infused silicone construction differs from conventional expanding foam tips. The changes can improve security, particularly for smaller ears, but comfort and retention remain personal. Sweat and skin oil can still loosen the seal during strenuous exercise, so a good walking fit does not guarantee stability throughout a run.

That seal affects the strongest reason to buy these earbuds: noise cancellation. Steady aircraft rumble and everyday office noise become substantially less intrusive, with an improvement over AirPods Pro 2. Voices and announcements can remain audible, especially without music. Try the different tips and run Apple's seal check before judging the cancellation. Transparency mode makes nearby conversation sound natural, while Conversation Awareness lowers media volume when you start speaking.

Both the earbuds and charging case carry an IP57 dust- and water-resistance rating. That is useful reassurance for sweat and unexpected rain, not a reason to take them swimming. Stem squeezes handle playback, and swipes adjust volume without reaching for a phone.

Bass balance and listening time

The sound has more bass weight and audible detail than its predecessor, with enough separation to follow vocals through busy arrangements. It is an energetic presentation rather than a strictly neutral one. Bass and treble emphasis can vary with hardware volume and fit, and the low end may become tiring during longer sessions. Apple still provides no general user-adjustable earbud equalizer to dial it back.

Head-tracked Spatial Audio can make compatible movies feel more enveloping, though its appeal for music depends on taste. Listeners who prioritize neutrality and fine vocal detail should also consider the Technics EAH-AZ100 or Bowers & Wilkins Pi8.

Apple estimates up to eight hours of ANC listening per charge and 24 hours including the case. Mixed use with extra features enabled can fall closer to five and a half hours, so those estimates should not become an all-day guarantee. The case supports USB-C and wireless charging; a five-minute earbud top-up provides approximately an hour of playback. Front touch controls replace the case's physical pairing button, making resets less obvious.

Workout sensing and translation limits

Heart-rate sensing feeds workout data into Apple's Fitness and Health apps without requiring an Apple Watch. Reliable skin contact matters: a slipping earbud can interrupt readings during vigorous activity. Treat it as a convenient workout tool, not a promise of medical accuracy or a universal replacement for a chest strap.

Live Translation requires a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, suitable software and downloaded language resources. It can help with conversation, but setup takes effort, and delays, background speech or contextual errors can disrupt understanding. Important conversations still call for more dependable interpretation. Translation also works on some earlier AirPods, reducing its value as an upgrade incentive.

Verdict

AirPods Pro 3 are a strong choice for iPhone users replacing worn-out earbuds who value quieter travel and integrated workout tracking. Improved cancellation and a wider choice of tip sizes are more persuasive everyday benefits than the headline translation feature.

Fit uncertainty, bass-heavy tuning and limited Android support narrow that recommendation. Hooked Powerbeats Pro 2 deserve consideration for demanding workouts, while functioning AirPods Pro 2 remain worth keeping. Buy the Pro 3 when their cancellation and fit improvements solve a specific problem for you.
