WhatsApp Is Bringing Separate Meta AI Conversations Into the Main Chat List

A new Android beta lets selected users create named AI conversations with custom profile pictures, making it easier to manage different topics without navigating through Meta AI's existing thread system.

WhatsApp is expanding how users interact with Meta AI by allowing individual chatbot conversations to appear directly in the application's main chat list. According to original reporting published by WABetaInfo on November 4, the functionality is rolling out to selected Android beta testers running WhatsApp beta version 2.26.44.6. The change gives AI conversations a more prominent position alongside ordinary messaging threads rather than keeping them inside a separate interface.

Previously, WhatsApp offered a thread-based system for organizing discussions with Meta AI. Users could maintain conversations about different subjects, but switching between those discussions required opening the main Meta AI conversation and navigating to its thread-management interface. The new implementation turns those threads into individually accessible chats, reducing the steps needed to return to a particular AI conversation.

Creating an AI-powered chat begins inside an existing Meta AI conversation. A new menu option opens an interface where users can enter a descriptive name and assign a custom profile picture. Once created, the conversation appears in WhatsApp's regular chat list with a message preview. A Meta AI identifier is displayed over its profile image to distinguish the chatbot from a human contact.

WhatsApp is also introducing a dedicated AI filter within the Chats tab. This lets users view their AI-powered conversations together instead of searching through their entire messaging history. The filter is optional and can be moved away from the main filter row. Individual AI chats can also be deleted when they are no longer needed, giving users additional control over how prominently these conversations appear.

The feature remains in a limited rollout rather than a general public release. WABetaInfo reports that only some Android beta testers currently have access, even when using a compatible version of WhatsApp. Wider availability is expected over the coming weeks, but WhatsApp has not announced a public launch date. For now, the change illustrates a more integrated approach to AI conversations within an application traditionally organized around communication between people.
