Walmart has officially embraced agentic commerce with the rollout of Agent Gateway, an open Model Context Protocol (MCP) server engineered to allow autonomous consumer AI agents to search product inventory, check store availability, and complete transactions on behalf of verified shoppers.

Announced by Walmart President and CEO John Furner at the Masters of Scale Summit in San Francisco, the infrastructure marks a sharp philosophical divergence from chief e-commerce rival Amazon. While Amazon recently deployed aggressive web-scraping defenses and bot-detection heuristics to systematically block third-party AI agents from executing purchases, Walmart is establishing structured APIs to welcome autonomous assistants across both Walmart and Sam's Club platforms.

Built on the Model Context Protocol originally pioneered by AI lab Anthropic, Agent Gateway functions as an authenticated bridge connecting popular consumer assistants—including Meta's Muse, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Google's Gemini—directly into Walmart's commercial transaction engine. The architecture allows an AI agent to execute routine household replenishments using a customer's preferred delivery windows without exposing raw credit card numbers or account passwords to the language model.

Walmart has also implemented transactional guardrails that clearly demarcate agent-initiated checkouts from direct human actions, enabling consumers to set strict per-order price ceilings, establish pre-approved brand registries, and mandate secondary human confirmation before high-value or subscription orders are dispatched.
