The Browser Company announced Thursday that it will permanently shut down its flagship Arc web browser on December 22, 2026, officially concluding support for the innovative application that popularized vertical tabs, nested spaces, and split-screen browser navigation. The decision follows the company’s $610 million acquisition by Atlassian last year and formalizes a complete organizational transition toward Dia, its new artificial intelligence-centered browser.\[2\]

The decommissioning timeline begins immediately: new Arc user account creation was disabled on Thursday. On November 23, The Browser Company will terminate cross-device tab synchronization and deactivate mobile artificial intelligence capabilities, including the 'Browse for Me' autonomous search feature on iOS and Android. Finally, on December 22, the desktop browser will become completely inaccessible on macOS and Windows, all existing user accounts will be purged, and Arc Search will be permanently delisted from Google Play and the Apple App Store.\[2\]

The Browser Company published an extensive migration utility allowing existing users to export browsing history, bookmarks, and pinned sidebar tabs directly into Dia or open standard HTML formats. While alternative indie browsers like the Gecko-based Zen browser have adopted Arc’s architectural concepts, The Browser Company confirmed that its entire core engineering and security personnel have already transitioned to developing Dia's enterprise workspace features.\[2\]

Our take: Arc was widely praised for reimagining the static web browser into an expressive operating system for web applications, but its steep learning curve and high resource consumption hindered mainstream consumer monetization. Atlassian’s decision to pull the plug and redeploy the team behind Dia highlights the harsh reality facing indie browser development: innovative interface design alone cannot sustain a standalone platform when hyper-scalers bundle AI features directly into Chromium and Safari.
