Tenstorrent closes $1.5 billion Series E at $6.2 billion valuation to scale open Galaxy AI servers
Led by Jim Keller, the RISC-V chip designer doubles its valuation to commercialize open-architecture hardware as an alternative to proprietary GPUs.
Technology news
AI hardware startup Tenstorrent announced on Wednesday that it has closed a $1.5 billion Series E financing round, establishing a post-money valuation of $6.2 billion. The round was co-led by Trace Capital and Innovation X, with participation from institutional investors including ARK Invest, Cadence Ventures, Fidelity, Morgan Stanley, and Sandisk. The valuation more than doubles the $2.6 billion valuation the company secured in late 2024.[4]
CEO Jim Keller, the legendary microprocessor designer behind Apple's A4/A5, AMD's Zen, and Tesla's Full Self-Driving silicon, revealed that Tenstorrent rebuffed acquisition bids valued up to $5 billion from established chipmakers earlier this year. Keller cited successful customer validation in May—demonstrating that Tenstorrent's modular Galaxy servers could execute complex DeepSeek open-weight models with superior energy and cost economics—as the catalyst to remain an independent challenger to Nvidia's datacenter hegemony.[4]
Tenstorrent will utilize the fresh capital to ramp commercial volume manufacturing of its Galaxy servers and scale its open-source software compiler stack. Built around high-density RISC-V CPU cores paired with modular tensix AI accelerators and high-bandwidth interconnects, Galaxy servers allow enterprise datacenters and sovereign AI projects to train and deploy frontier models on premises without paying proprietary GPU software premiums or enduring multi-quarter allocation backlogs.[4]
Our take: Tenstorrent's massive capital raise demonstrates that enterprise buyers and institutional investors are hungry for a viable, open-architecture alternative to Nvidia's proprietary CUDA ecosystem. By leveraging modular chiplets, open RISC-V compute cores, and an unencumbered open-source compiler, Tenstorrent offers cost-conscious cloud builders genuine hardware sovereignty. While dislodging Nvidia from hyperscale clusters remains a monumental challenge, Jim Keller's proven track record of architectural execution makes Tenstorrent the most formidable open silicon challenger in the industry.
