Swedish industrial design and audio engineering house Teenage Engineering officially announced the EP-35 on Thursday, expanding its distinctive line of portable music machines into dedicated instrument amplification. Designed to complement synthesizers, electric guitars, and vocal microphones, the battery-powered unit blends compact field performance capabilities with studio-grade audio routing.\[2\]

The chassis features a multi-channel input panel on its rear surface, incorporating a high-impedance 1/4-inch instrument input for guitars and basses, a 3.5mm stereo line input for pocket operators and sequencers, and a balanced XLR input equipped with switchable 48V phantom power for studio condenser microphones. Audio can also be streamed wirelessly via Bluetooth, while native support for Bluetooth Auracast allows multiple EP-35 units to synchronize over short distances without cables. When two units are paired in stereo mode, tilting a speaker chassis to the left or right automatically assigns it to the corresponding acoustic channel.\[2\]

In signature Teenage Engineering fashion, the amplifier features an interactive front control surface with backlit tactile buttons controlling an onboard multi-effects processor that includes a digital looper, pitch shifter, chorus, tape-style delay, and ambient reverb, manipulated via an arcade-style miniature joystick. Powered by an internal lithium-ion battery delivering up to eight hours of continuous playback, the EP-35 also acts as a class-compliant USB-C audio interface for direct multichannel recording into digital audio workstations on macOS, Windows, and iPadOS.\[2\]

Our take: Teenage Engineering’s EP-35 successfully rethinks the utilitarian guitar amplifier into an expressive, modular performance tool. Offering 48V phantom power and USB-C audio interface functionality alongside Auracast stereo linking makes it uniquely compelling for mobile electronic musicians, buskers, and podcast producers. While Teenage Engineering’s bespoke design language commands a boutique price, the versatility of its acoustic and digital routing bridges the gap between field rehearsal and studio recording.
