SpaceX has finalized a binding commitment with private equity firm Apollo Global Management for approximately $40 billion in dedicated GPU and data center equipment financing, marking what the aerospace giant describes as the largest committed artificial intelligence hardware lease facility in industry history. Disclosed in regulatory filings on Monday, the agreement provides non-dilutive capital to fund massive computational expansions across SpaceX’s launch vehicle engineering, satellite internet constellation management, and deep collaboration with Elon Musk’s xAI venture.

Under the bespoke financial structure, an entity managed by Apollo will directly purchase high-density server enclosures, optical networking fabric, and advanced accelerators from leading semiconductor vendors. Apollo will then lease the infrastructure back to SpaceX under contracts lasting approximately five to five-and-a-quarter years, with billing initiating upon the physical delivery and operational sign-off of each hardware tranche.

The transaction reflects a dramatic shift in how frontier technology companies fund the exorbitant capital costs of AI infrastructure. By relying on asset-backed leasing facilities rather than equity issuance or traditional high-yield debt, SpaceX preserves corporate control while securing guaranteed hardware allocations. Analysts indicate the computational capacity will support both real-time orbital telemetry for tens of thousands of Starlink satellites and distributed model training for next-generation autonomous spacecraft avionics.
