Sony's six-inch ELF-MN1 spatial display is attracting more orders than expected in Japan, potentially delaying deliveries ahead of its December launch.

Sony's new ELF-MN1 spatial display has encountered an unexpected problem before reaching customers: demand is outpacing the company's initial expectations. According to Japanese technology site CC News Net, Sony has issued a supply notice warning that customers may face longer delivery times after preorders opened on October 28. The development comes just two days after Sony introduced its compact, glasses-free 3D display.

The ELF-MN1 brings technology previously associated with Sony's larger professional Spatial Reality Displays into a six-inch device intended for desks and personal entertainment. It can present avatars, digital characters, and other compatible 3D content without requiring users to wear special glasses or a headset. A compatible smartphone or Windows PC connects through USB-C, allowing supported applications to supply the content.

Sony's display uses eye-tracking technology to adjust its stereoscopic presentation to the viewer's position. An infrared sensor helps maintain eye tracking in darker environments, while the panel delivers a pixel density of 403 pixels per inch. Sony describes that as the highest pixel density among its Spatial Reality Displays as of the October 28 announcement. The display also supports development through a Unity SDK, extending its potential beyond ready-made digital figures.

The Japanese Sony Store lists the ELF-MN1 at 53,900 yen including tax, with an official release date of December 11, 2026. CC News Net reports that delivery estimates shifted from the expected launch date toward shipping when inventory becomes available. Sony's reported supply notice says orders have substantially exceeded its forecasts, although the company has not disclosed preorder totals or a revised delivery schedule.

The supply warning is significant because the ELF-MN1 targets a different audience from Sony's larger spatial displays. Its smaller size, smartphone compatibility, and support for digital character services such as HoloModel make the technology more approachable for individual users. However, strong early orders do not establish broader consumer demand or guarantee success beyond Japan, where Sony currently offers the product.
