Finnish smart ring pioneer Oura filed a federal patent infringement complaint on Thursday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against Indian wearable competitor Ultrahuman, seeking financial damages and an injunction to immediately block US sales and imports of the recently launched Ultrahuman Ring Pro. The legal offensive marks an aggressive escalation in the rapidly expanding smart ring market, reigniting a bitter intellectual property feud between the two health-tracking manufacturers.

In its federal filing, Oura alleges that Ultrahuman’s redesigned Ring Pro infringes two specific United States patents: design patent D804,471 and newly issued patent 12,769,363, granted to Oura on October 20, 2026. The patents encompass the architectural miniaturization of multi-wavelength photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors, temperature thermistors, and high-density curved lithium-polymer battery packaging within an ultra-thin circular form factor.

The lawsuit comes mere months after Ultrahuman successfully engineered a regulatory comeback in the United States. Following an August 2025 International Trade Commission (ITC) ruling that banned imports of the original Ultrahuman Ring Air for patent infringement, Ultrahuman introduced the redesigned Ring Pro in February 2026, securing clearance from US Customs and Border Protection in March. Oura contends that while Customs addressed legacy patent claims, the Ring Pro continues to infringe its newly issued sensor portfolio.

The legal clash unfolds against a backdrop of surging consumer interest in screenless health wearables, with market research firm IDC projecting global smart ring shipments to expand 12.8% to 4.9 million units in 2026. With Ultrahuman having closed a $70 million funding round in September led by Qualcomm Ventures at a $365 million valuation, and Oura navigating intense competition following Samsung’s entry with the Galaxy Ring, the litigation represents a pivotal battle for dominance in North American wearable retail channels.
