The PC modding platform will require clearer AI labels, introduce more content filtering controls, and enforce its revised policies beginning January 2.

Nexus Mods is introducing mandatory disclosure requirements for artificial intelligence in uploaded modifications, marking a significant policy change for one of PC gaming's largest mod distribution platforms. The company announced the rules November 3, with The Verge reporting their implications on November 4 UTC. Creators uploading new mods must now identify whether generative AI was involved in producing their work.

The revised system distinguishes between AI-generated content, AI-assisted modifications, and AI-created promotional media. Creators who classify their projects as AI-assisted must also provide a public explanation of how the technology was used. This distinction matters for modifications that combine traditionally produced assets with AI-generated textures, code, voices, or other components.

Despite introducing stricter labeling requirements, Nexus Mods is not banning AI-generated modifications. Site owner Victor Folmann explained that generative tools are increasingly used throughout creative workflows, making a universal prohibition difficult to define and enforce. The platform instead intends to provide more transparency while preserving creators' ability to use those tools.

Players will also receive more control over what appears while browsing. Nexus Mods is improving preferences that allow users to filter AI-generated material from game pages and the homepage, with additional search controls planned. The company is also experimenting with limits on repeated appearances by individual authors in Recently Added listings, addressing concerns that rapid uploads can push other creators' projects out of view.

Existing mod authors have until January 2, 2027, to satisfy the updated requirements under a 60-day transition period. After that date, unresolved disclosure or permission violations may result in moderation, restrictions, or removal. Nexus Mods also reiterated that it will not use hosted modifications to train AI systems or sell or license them to others for that purpose. The company acknowledges that detecting undisclosed AI involvement remains imperfect and that enforcement will initially depend heavily on community reports and human review.
