Google clarifies how connected-app data can feed personalized ads

An October 16 update adds an important qualification to Google’s older privacy messaging.

Technology news

Google has added an October 16, 2026 update to a privacy post originally published in 2020. The update says that when users choose to connect apps such as Photos and Workspace to other Google services, a subset of that data can personalize experiences and, depending on settings, ads.[4]

Its accompanying help page is more specific: Search services can reference summaries, excerpts and inferences from connected content, and that same information may be used to show ads. Google says advertisers do not gain access to a user’s Gmail inbox or Google Photos library.[6]

The help page also says users choose whether to connect content apps and can disconnect them. Settings are being updated, so the controls described may not yet match every account.[6]

Our take: the useful distinction is between giving advertisers direct access to an inbox and allowing information derived from connected content to influence ads. Today’s clarification describes the latter; it does not establish that every user’s email is automatically connected.
