Electronic Arts has brought 25 games from its historical PC catalog to Steam, including entries from the Wing Commander and Ultima franchises. The release includes seven newly restored Anniversary Editions covering six Wing Commander titles and the 1996 PC version of Road Rash. EA detailed the preservation project in an official November 5 publication, while TechSpot reported additional availability and pricing information on November 6.
The restoration effort began with an unexpected discovery at EA's Redwood Shores campus in March 2022. Senior producer Jim Vessella found an archive containing nearly 20,000 physical media assets, including videotapes and film reels. By April 2026, the preservation team had digitized approximately 6,000 items representing an estimated 2,500 hours of historical footage. Among the recovered material were original source tapes for Wing Commander and Road Rash.
The recovered footage allowed EA and community contributors to rebuild cinematic sequences from higher-quality source material. Wing Commander III and IV received extensive video restoration, with players able to select newer upscaled cinematics or older video presentations. The project also incorporated enhancements developed by dedicated modders, including support for smoother gameplay and modern controllers. EA's official account describes the painstaking process of isolating, identifying, correcting, and integrating individual scenes.
Privateer 2 required a separate recovery effort. According to EA, the game's original cinematics director, Steve Hilliker, located a collection of master tapes in his attic and contributed a new director's cut of the footage. The project also integrated compatibility improvements and subtitles. Road Rash received restoration work as well, including the relicensing of its original soundtrack for the game's digital release.
TechSpot reports that the restored Anniversary Editions cost $9.99 individually, while the other titles are priced at $4.99. The publication also reports a half-price introductory promotion through November 19 and free Anniversary Edition upgrades for certain existing Wing Commander owners on GOG or the EA app. The significance of the release extends beyond another batch of older games becoming available: it demonstrates how surviving archival material and established fan-made tools can contribute to commercial preservation projects.
