Canva introduces Craft, an in-house foundation model that plans visual layouts before generating imagery
Trained on billions of design assets, the proprietary model plans compositional hierarchies and text typography across 30 aspect ratios up to 2K resolution.
Technology news
Visual communication platform Canva debuted Craft on Thursday afternoon, marking the release of the Australian technology giant's first fully proprietary, in-house artificial intelligence image generation foundation model. Unlike generic open-source diffusion models that attempt to generate unconstrained pixels simultaneously, Craft incorporates a two-stage generative pipeline designed specifically to solve graphic design composition.[3]
In traditional diffusion architectures, models often produce aesthetically striking images that fail practical design requirements, such as placing high-contrast visual clutter directly over designated headline areas or failing to preserve consistent negative space for typography. Craft resolves this by dividing generation into two sequential steps: a structural planning stage that generates compositional bounding boxes, text padding, and focal hierarchies, followed by a diffusion rendering stage that fills textures and subjects within those predetermined spatial rules.[3]
The model supports rendering at resolutions up to 2K across more than 30 standardized aspect ratios, accommodating everything from horizontal YouTube thumbnails to vertical Instagram Stories and wide billboard print formats. Canva confirmed that Craft was trained exclusively on its catalog of over 100 million fully licensed stock assets and verified public domain archives, shielding enterprise customers from intellectual property infringement claims. The model began rolling out globally on Thursday across Canva’s Magic Studio suite for all Pro, Teams, and Enterprise subscribers, with free tier accounts granted 50 monthly generation allocations.[3]
Our take: Canva Craft tackles the fundamental weakness of mainstream AI imagery: the lack of typographic and spatial discipline required for professional graphic design. Separating layout planning from pixel rendering ensures that generated assets respect negative space, branding guidelines, and readability. By training strictly on licensed stock, Canva also provides enterprise marketing departments with the copyright certainty needed to deploy generative creative workflows at scale.
