BMW unveils 2027 X5 and electric iX5 with 460 kW ultra-fast charging and 450-mile range
Porting Neue Klasse technology to its flexible CLAR architecture, BMW debuts the all-electric iX5 with 570 horsepower alongside mild-hybrid and plug-in powertrains.

BMW has officially pulled the wraps off its fifth-generation X5 sport utility vehicle lineup for the 2027 model year, headlined by the debut of the all-electric iX5 alongside refined internal-combustion and plug-in hybrid variants assembled at the company's Spartanburg, South Carolina manufacturing plant.
Rather than confining its next-generation electric vehicle architecture exclusively to dedicated Neue Klasse models like the iX3, BMW has backported its sixth-generation eDrive propulsion hardware to its flexible, multi-energy Cluster Architecture (CLAR). This strategic decision allows BMW to serve diverging global market demands: offering traditional and electrified combustion engines to buyers in regions where charging infrastructure lags, while delivering a flagship high-voltage EV to competitive markets.
The pure-electric iX5 represents a substantial technological leap over earlier BMW electric SUVs. Employing a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain, the vehicle utilizes a 245-horsepower asynchronous induction motor on the front axle and an electrically excited synchronous motor generating 325 horsepower on the rear axle. Because neither motor relies on permanent rare-earth magnets, rotational drag and manufacturing supply vulnerabilities are sharply minimized. Together, the powertrain produces a combined 570 horsepower (425 kW) and 593 lb-ft (804 Nm) of torque.
High-voltage electrical architecture is where the iX5 stands out against premium luxury competitors. Equipped with BMW's Gen-6 cylindrical cell battery pack, the iX5 supports ultra-fast DC fast-charging rates of up to 460 kW, enabling a 10-to-80 percent charging session in under 12 minutes under optimal thermal conditions. Maximum highway driving range is estimated at an impressive 450 miles under EPA testing protocols. For traditional buyers, BMW will continue offering the X5 40 xDrive with a 394-hp turbocharged inline-six mild hybrid, to be joined later by an X5 50e plug-in hybrid featuring a 26.5 kWh battery pack providing 44 miles of pure-electric commuting.
Our take: BMW's refusal to abandon its agnostic CLAR platform is paying dividends. By porting 460 kW fast-charging and magnet-free motors into a familiar, practical luxury chassis, the iX5 eliminates the range and charging anxieties that have slowed large electric SUV adoption.
