Amazon Gives Alexa More Than 100 New Shopping Powers, From Subscriptions to Refunds
Amazon is expanding its shopping assistant beyond product recommendations, letting US customers manage lists, deliveries, memberships, and billing issues through conversational AI.
Technology news
Amazon announced a substantial expansion of Alexa for Shopping on October 29, introducing more than 100 new capabilities designed to handle routine shopping and account-management tasks. The additions allow customers to create and modify shopping lists, manage product subscriptions, update delivery instructions, and investigate billing questions using conversational requests rather than navigating separate account menus.
The new functionality covers several common shopping activities. Customers can build gift lists and registries, add or remove items, and move products between lists. Amazon's Subscribe & Save service is also integrated, allowing users to request changes to delivery frequency, pause recurring orders, or skip an upcoming shipment. Delivery preferences can be modified through the same interface, including instructions associated with specific addresses.
Alexa for Shopping can now answer account-related questions involving Prime benefits, Audible subscription renewals, gift card balances, refunds, and potentially unfamiliar charges. These functions expand the assistant's responsibilities beyond finding products and comparing prices. Amazon is positioning the software as a conversational interface for managing ongoing relationships with its retail and subscription services.
The announcement also provides a glimpse into Amazon's adoption figures. The company says more than 400 million customers have used Alexa for Shopping during the past 12 months. It also reports that the number of customers using the assistant's agentic features has grown more than eightfold since the beginning of 2026. Those figures are company-reported and do not independently establish customer satisfaction, usage frequency, or the success rate of individual automated actions.
Amazon says the new capabilities are available now to US customers through the Alexa interface in the Amazon Shopping app and on desktop. The expansion underscores a broader shift in consumer AI: instead of merely answering questions or recommending products, assistants are increasingly being designed to complete practical transactions and account changes. How consistently Alexa handles complicated requests, errors, and account safeguards remains an important question beyond the scope of the announcement.
