The MacBook Air M5 is the laptop we recommend to most people in [our guide to the best laptops](/articles/best-laptops-2026-buying-guide/), but it's a minimalist machine. You get two Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports, a MagSafe 3 charging port and a headphone jack, and that's it. No HDMI, no USB-A, no SD card slot. The right accessories turn it into a full desktop setup at home and keep it safe and charged on the road.

Our team went through this year's hubs, docks, chargers, sleeves, stands, drives and input devices, and we checked every pick against Apple's specs for the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air M5: port speeds, charging wattage and, most importantly, how many external displays it can drive. Below you'll find our quick picks, a closer look at each accessory, recommendations by need, and a short guide on what matters before you buy.

**MacBook Air M5 compatibility at a glance** (13-inch and 15-inch are identical here):

- **Ports:** two Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4 ports (up to 40Gb/s, with charging and DisplayPort), MagSafe 3, 3.5mm headphone jack.
- **External displays:** up to two, with the laptop's own screen still on. Each can run up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz. With a single screen, it supports up to 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz or 4K at 240Hz. Both displays can run from a single Thunderbolt port.
- **Charging:** ships with a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (60W max) and a 2m USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. Fast charging needs a 70W or higher USB-C PD charger.

**A note on prices:** accessory prices change all the time, especially around Black Friday (November 27) and Cyber Monday (November 30). We show approximate price ranges ($ = under $50, $$ = $50–$150, $$$ = $150–$400, $$$$ = over $400) along with list prices where we have them. If you're buying for the 15-inch model, make sure you pick the right size for sleeves and cases.

USB-C hub

## Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1) {#anker-555}

The hub we'd keep in every MacBook Air bag

![Anker 555 8-in-1 USB-C hub with HDMI and Ethernet](https://reviewblip.com/editorial-images/b4721c7dc53aad543d4c2c44f987e51350a3cee4f01acd1acd0138697a3604dc)

- **Ports:** 2x USB-C, 2x USB-A, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, SD and microSD
- **Data:** 10Gbps on USB-C and USB-A
- **Video:** HDMI up to 4K at 60Hz
- **Pass-through charging:** Up to 85W
- **Weight:** Just under 4.5oz (130g)
- **Price:** around $50 ($49.99 list)

If you only buy one accessory for your MacBook Air M5, make it a good hub. The Anker 555 adds everything the Air leaves out from a single port: an HDMI output that runs a 4K monitor at a smooth 60Hz (many cheap hubs stop at 30Hz), two 10Gbps USB-A ports for older drives and dongles, a 10Gbps USB-C data port, Gigabit Ethernet for when Wi-Fi lets you down, and SD and microSD readers for camera cards.

A second USB-C port accepts up to 85W of pass-through power, so you can plug your charger into the hub and keep the laptop topped up while you work. It's light and compact enough to live in a bag. Two caveats: the card readers are UHS-I, so photographers who shoot to fast UHS-II cards will wait longer for transfers, and the hub runs warm with heavy use.

#### What we like

- 4K/60Hz HDMI
- Fast 10Gbps USB-A and USB-C ports
- Ethernet and two card readers
- Great value

#### What we don't

- Slower UHS-I card readers
- Gets warm
- Only one external display

**Want two monitors from a hub?** The EZQuest USB 4 Dual Display 8-in-1 Hub (Pro Series, $149.99) can run two 4K/60Hz displays from one cable with no extra software, which suits the Air M5's two-display support. For something pocket-sized, the Satechi OntheGo 7-in-1 Multiport Adapter is round, magnetic and weighs just 2.4oz.

Thunderbolt dock

## Kensington SD5000T5 EQ Thunderbolt 5 Dock {#kensington-sd5000t5}

Turn your Air into a dual-monitor desktop with one cable

![Kensington SD5000T5 EQ Thunderbolt 5 docking station](https://reviewblip.com/editorial-images/cb284cca44b77fd3eebce55c36a3aa9a92f102c51ef4f5b505b6036175b5f869)

- **Ports:** 11, including 4x Thunderbolt 5, 3x USB-A, 2.5Gb Ethernet, UHS-II SD and microSD, audio
- **Laptop charging:** Up to 140W (180W power supply)
- **Displays:** 2x 6K at 60Hz on the Air M5
- **Speed on the Air M5:** 40Gb/s (Thunderbolt 4)
- **Extra:** Front 60W port to charge a second device
- **Price range:** $$$ ($299.99 list)

A dock is what you want if your Air spends part of the day on a desk. Plug in one cable and you get power, your monitors, wired networking and all your peripherals at once. The Kensington SD5000T5 is the best-value dock we know of: it has the ports most people actually need, without the premium price of 20-port monsters. Because the MacBook Air M5 can drive two external displays from a single Thunderbolt port, this dock can run two 6K screens at 60Hz while the Air's own display stays on.

You get 2.5Gb Ethernet, fast UHS-II card readers and up to 140W of laptop charging, which is far more than the Air needs, plus a front Thunderbolt port that can push 60W to a second device. It's a Thunderbolt 5 dock, so it will run at Thunderbolt 4 speeds (40Gb/s) on the Air, but it's ready for your next Mac. We'd have liked more USB-C ports, and the upstream port sits on the front, which makes cables a little messier.

#### What we like

- Two 6K displays with no extra software
- 2.5Gb Ethernet and UHS-II readers
- Plenty of charging power
- Future-proof Thunderbolt 5

#### What we don't

- No extra plain USB-C ports
- Upstream port on the front
- Overkill if you only use one screen

**Need HDMI or more ports?** The Kensington SD5010T5 has the same specs but swaps two Thunderbolt ports for two HDMI 2.1 outputs. If you want the most ports possible, the CalDigit TS5 Plus packs 20, including 10Gb Ethernet, though it costs around $500.

Sleeve

## tomtoc 360° Protective Laptop Sleeve {#tomtoc-360}

Serious drop protection without the bulk

![tomtoc 360 Protective Laptop Sleeve for MacBook Air](https://reviewblip.com/editorial-images/399d2d1309b04523574437263d93032d276b62d0582fbbdb501c689e169a869c)

- **Type:** Padded sleeve
- **Protection:** CornerArmor corners, high-density padding
- **Storage:** Front pocket for charger, cables, mouse or SSD
- **Extras:** Strap for an AirTag or keys
- **Sizes:** 13-inch and 15-inch versions
- **Price:** around $30 ($29.99)

The Air's aluminum body is tough, but corners and edges dent easily when a bag hits the floor. The tomtoc 360° sleeve is the one we'd pick for most people because it protects exactly those weak points. Reinforced CornerArmor corners and high-resilience edges absorb impacts, and the brand says the design has passed military-standard drop testing, while the sleeve itself stays slim enough to slide into any backpack.

The front pocket is big enough for the charger, a cable, a mouse or one of the drives in this guide, and there's a small strap for an AirTag or keys. The one thing to watch: choose the right size. The 13-inch Air actually has a 13.6-inch screen and the 15-inch a 15.3-inch screen, so check that the listing you pick names the current MacBook Air models.

#### What we like

- Excellent corner protection
- Slim and light
- Handy accessory pocket
- Affordable

#### What we don't

- Doesn't protect against scratches while you use the laptop
- Easy to order the wrong size

**On a tighter budget?** MOSISO's padded sleeves (often sold with a matching accessory pouch) cost well under $20 and are a solid basic option.

Laptop stand

## Rain Design mStand {#rain-design-mstand}

Lift the screen to eye level and save your neck

![Rain Design mStand laptop stand holding a MacBook](https://reviewblip.com/editorial-images/d1c6eba669133e06d94e096e7bd398b8f4930d20482eb5f42924560eaf1add63)

- **Type:** Fixed-height desk stand
- **Material:** Aluminum
- **Colors:** Black, Gold, Midnight, Silver, Space Gray, Starlight
- **Extras:** Cable pass-through at the back
- **Rotating version:** mStand 360 ($59)
- **Price:** around $49

Working hunched over a laptop all day is a recipe for a sore neck and shoulders. A stand raises the Air's screen closer to eye level, and paired with the keyboard and mouse in this guide, it turns your laptop into a comfortable desk setup. The Rain Design mStand is a classic for good reason: it's a sturdy, solid stand that looks like it came from Apple, and it comes in colors that match every MacBook Air finish, including Midnight and Starlight.

Because the laptop sits open on top, air can flow underneath, and the cutout at the back keeps your cables tidy. If you want to swivel the screen to show someone across the desk, the mStand 360 adds a rotating base for about $10 more. The trade-off with any fixed stand is that you can't adjust the height or fold it for travel.

#### What we like

- Sturdy and stable
- Colors that match the Air
- Keeps cables tidy
- Reasonably priced

#### What we don't

- Height isn't adjustable
- Not portable
- You'll need a separate keyboard and mouse

**Other stands we like:** the Twelve South Curve SE is another stylish fixed stand that lifts your MacBook 6.5 inches off the desk (you assemble three pieces yourself). For the coffee shop, the Rain Design mBar pro+ folds flat and weighs just 205g.

External monitor

## BenQ MA320U {#benq-ma320u}

A big 4K screen designed around MacBooks

![BenQ MA320U 32-inch 4K monitor for Mac](https://reviewblip.com/editorial-images/15a74190d98802158cf3e4a413b5437ad2053fe5bbc7496300612ea11b202277)

- **Size:** 32"
- **Resolution:** 3840 x 2160 (4K)
- **Connection:** USB-C with 90W charging, 2x HDMI, USB-A
- **Stand:** Height, tilt and rotation
- **Extras:** Mac color modes, KVM, DisplayPilot 2 app
- **Price range:** $$$$ (a little more than the 27-inch MA270U's $549.99)

Hooking the Air up to a big screen is the single biggest productivity upgrade you can make, and the BenQ MA320U is the monitor we'd pair with it. Its colors are tuned to closely match a MacBook's display, so photos and video look the same on both screens, and BenQ's DisplayPilot 2 app lets you control brightness and settings from macOS. Image quality is excellent, with crisp text and lively color, and the built-in hub adds the USB ports the Air lacks.

A single USB-C cable carries video, data and up to 90W of power, which is more than enough to keep the MacBook Air M5 charged, so you may not need a hub at your desk at all. The stand adjusts for height, tilt and rotation. And because the Air M5 supports two external displays, you can add a second screen later. There's no webcam, and the speakers are only OK.

#### What we like

- Colors matched to MacBook screens
- One-cable setup with 90W charging
- Control from macOS
- Fully adjustable stand

#### What we don't

- No webcam
- Speakers are just OK
- Not cheap

**Want a smaller or sharper screen?** The 27-inch BenQ MA270U ($549.99 list, with a glossy MA270UP option) is the more affordable 4K choice, and creators who want 5K sharpness should look at the BenQ PD2730S. See [our guide to the best monitors](/articles/best-monitors-2026-buying-guide/) for more options.

Charger (GaN)

## Anker Prime Charger (100W, 3 Ports, GaN) {#anker-prime-100w}

Fast-charge your Air and your phone from one small brick

![Anker Prime 100W 3-port GaN wall charger](https://reviewblip.com/editorial-images/07ad676723eda37d83854c33824b29f64d31e0b21aa48d0a926f482dcceac6c5)

- **Ports:** 2x USB-C (up to 100W), 1x USB-A (22.5W)
- **Total output:** 100W
- **Size:** 1.7 x 1.1 x 2.7 inches
- **Weight:** 6oz (170g)
- **Plug:** Foldable
- **Price:** around $70 ($69.99 list)

Apple now ships the MacBook Air M5 with a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (up to 60W), which is fine for overnight charging. But to fast-charge the Air, Apple says you need a USB-C PD charger rated at 70W or higher, and many popular "65W" or "67W" travel chargers fall just short. The Anker Prime 100W clears that bar comfortably and plugs straight into the Air's MagSafe 3 cable or either Thunderbolt port.

Because it uses GaN chips, it's much smaller than its output suggests and easy to pack. Each USB-C port can deliver up to 100W, and the third USB-A port means you can charge your iPhone, AirPods or Apple Watch at the same time (the laptop gets less power when you share). Anker also redesigned it so it's less likely to fall out of a wall socket when knocked. It can't fast-charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro, but that doesn't matter for Air owners.

#### What we like

- Enough power to fast-charge the Air
- Compact and travel-friendly
- Three ports for your other devices
- Foldable plug

#### What we don't

- Power is split when several devices charge
- Pricier than basic chargers

**Only need something tiny?** The Anker Nano Charger 45W is fine for slower top-ups and is great for travel. If you want four ports, the Ugreen Nexode 100W 4-port charger ($54.99 list) can also fast-charge the Air.

External SSD

## SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD {#sandisk-extreme}

Tough, tiny storage for backups, photos and video

![SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD](https://reviewblip.com/editorial-images/d30c1d4c2055c79fbcbc96ea2e011f366aaefd196f020ca7c7de1b3d50d30c3f)

- **Interface:** USB-C (USB 3.2 Gen 2, 10Gbps)
- **Speed:** Up to 1,050MB/s read, 1,000MB/s write
- **Capacities:** Up to 8TB
- **Durability:** Rugged rubberized case, IP65 on the latest version
- **In the box:** USB-C cable plus USB-A adapter
- **Price range:** Varies by capacity (up to 8TB)

The base MacBook Air M5 now comes with 512GB of storage, which fills up quickly with photos, video projects and Time Machine backups. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is the drive we'd recommend to most Air owners: it's slim, light and wrapped in a grippy rubber shell that shrugs off bumps, with a loop for attaching it to a bag.

It plugs straight into the Air's USB-C ports with the included cable, and there's a USB-A adapter for older computers. It's available in capacities up to 8TB, so it can hold a full backup of even the largest Air configurations. It doesn't use the full 40Gb/s of the Air's Thunderbolt ports, though, so if you edit large video files from the drive, consider the faster option below. SanDisk sells several similar-looking drives, so check that the name says "Extreme Portable."

#### What we like

- Compact and rugged
- Fast enough for backups and media
- Up to 8TB
- USB-A adapter included

#### What we don't

- Doesn't take advantage of Thunderbolt speeds
- Similar names across SanDisk's lineup

**Need more speed?** The SanDisk Extreme Pro with USB4 (2TB or 4TB) is a USB4 option for the Air M5's 40Gb/s ports. It's larger and more expensive. The LaCie Rugged SSD4 is another fast USB4 option with a drop-proof design.

Mouse

## Logitech MX Master 4 {#mx-master-4}

The productivity mouse to beat on a Mac

![Logitech MX Master 4 for Mac mouse in Space Black and White Silver](https://reviewblip.com/editorial-images/b3562be39161025242252bb6c4c882c95568e21bdf2e20b4118ec31a157a5bb4)

- **Buttons:** 8, programmable with Options+
- **Sensor:** 200–8,000dpi
- **Scrolling:** SmartShift main wheel plus side wheel for horizontal scrolling
- **New:** Haptic feedback, Action Ring
- **Versions:** Standard (with USB-C Bolt receiver) or For Mac
- **Price:** around $120 ($119.99 list)

The Air's trackpad is excellent, but at a desk a good mouse is faster, more precise and kinder to your wrist. The Logitech MX Master 4 is the one we'd pick. Its sculpted shape and thumb rest are very comfortable for long sessions, the main wheel switches automatically from line-by-line to super-fast free scrolling, and a second wheel on the side scrolls horizontally, which is great for timelines, photos and wide spreadsheets.

The 2025 update adds haptic feedback (supported only by a few apps so far, mainly Adobe's), an Action Ring for shortcuts, a more reliable wireless connection and a stain-resistant coating. Either version works fine with a Mac. The "For Mac" model (Space Black or White Silver) connects over Bluetooth only, while the standard model includes a USB-C receiver, which is handy in busy offices but takes up one of the Air's two ports. It's right-handed only and expensive.

#### What we like

- Very comfortable
- Two scroll wheels
- Lots of programmable buttons
- Works across Mac, iPad and PC

#### What we don't

- Right-handed only
- Expensive
- Few apps use the haptics yet

**Prefer gestures?** Apple's Magic Trackpad gives you the same multi-touch gestures as the Air's built-in trackpad on your desk, and the Apple Magic Mouse is the best mouse for swipes. For travel, the Logitech MX Anywhere 3S For Mac is smaller and charges quickly.

Keyboard

## Logitech MX Keys S For Mac {#mx-keys-s}

A rock-solid desk keyboard that works with all your devices

![Logitech MX Keys S For Mac wireless keyboard](https://reviewblip.com/editorial-images/12e29b584b39ae6383e9a232f7588221300bf800eb323c4440b9639d955d6712)

- **Type:** Slim, low-profile, backlit
- **Layout:** Mac keys, full-size with numeric keypad
- **Multi-device:** Switch between 3 devices
- **Battery:** Up to 5 months (about 10 days with backlight always on)
- **Colors:** Space Gray, Pale Gray
- **Price range:** $$ (around $110–$130)

Once your Air is up on a stand, you need a separate keyboard, and the MX Keys S For Mac is the one we'd choose. It's the most solidly built Mac keyboard we know of, with a slim design that looks right next to a MacBook, a Mac-specific layout with Command and Option keys in the right places, and smart backlighting that wakes as your hands approach and adjusts to the room.

Dedicated buttons let you switch between three devices, such as your Air, an iPad and a work PC, and Logitech's Options+ app lets you remap function keys and set up Smart Actions that trigger several steps with one press. It's also cheaper than Apple's Magic Keyboard. What you give up is Touch ID, and the backlight drains the battery quickly if you leave it on all the time.

#### What we like

- Super sturdy build
- Mac layout and smart backlight
- Three-device switching
- Customizable keys

#### What we don't

- No Touch ID
- Backlight cuts battery life sharply

**Want Touch ID on your desk?** Apple's Magic Keyboard with Touch ID works with the MacBook Air M5 and lets you unlock and pay without reaching for the laptop. If you don't need a number pad, the Logitech MX Keys Mini for Mac ($99.99) is more compact.

**Not sure where to start?** For most MacBook Air M5 owners, a hub and a 70W-plus charger make the biggest difference day to day. If you work at a desk, add a stand, a keyboard and a mouse, then either a USB-C monitor (for one screen) or a Thunderbolt dock (for two).

## How to choose MacBook Air M5 accessories: 6 things that matter {#how-to-choose}

### 1. Know how many displays you want

The MacBook Air M5 can drive two external displays with its own screen still on, each at up to 6K and 60Hz (or 4K at 144Hz), and both can run from a single Thunderbolt port. One screen can go up to 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz or 4K at 240Hz. For one monitor, a USB-C monitor or a basic hub is enough. For two, choose a Thunderbolt dock or a hub that specifically supports dual displays on a Mac. Many cheap dual-HDMI hubs only mirror the same image on a Mac.

### 2. Hub or dock?

A hub is small, bus-powered and made for travel; it adds a few ports through one cable and passes your charger's power through. A dock has its own power supply, more ports and more display options, and it charges your laptop by itself. If your Air lives on a desk most of the day, a dock is worth it. If you move around, a hub is all you need.

### 3. Check the HDMI refresh rate

Many inexpensive hubs only run 4K monitors at 30Hz, which feels choppy when you move the mouse. Look for 4K at 60Hz (or better) in the specs, like on the Anker 555.

### 4. Charging wattage

The Air M5 charges from as little as 30W, but Apple says fast charging needs 70W or more. That makes a 100W GaN charger the practical choice if you want speed, and it leaves headroom to charge a phone at the same time. You can use a higher-wattage charger safely; the laptop only draws what it needs. Any USB-C PD charger works with the included MagSafe 3 cable or either Thunderbolt port.

### 5. Match port speeds to what you do

The Air's Thunderbolt 4 ports run at up to 40Gb/s. Everyday hubs and drives at 10Gbps are plenty for backups, documents and photos. If you edit video straight from an external drive, a USB4 or Thunderbolt SSD will make better use of those ports.

### 6. Get the size right

Sleeves and cases are made for specific models. The 13-inch Air has a 13.6-inch screen and the 15-inch a 15.3-inch screen, so look for listings that name the current MacBook Air rather than older 13.3-inch models.

## Frequently asked questions {#faq}

### How many external monitors does the MacBook Air M5 support?

Two, with the built-in display still on. Each can run at up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz, and both can connect through a single Thunderbolt port, for example via a Thunderbolt dock. A single display can go up to 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz or 4K at 240Hz. Our picks for screens are in [our guide to the best monitors](/articles/best-monitors-2026-buying-guide/).

### Does the MacBook Air M5 have Thunderbolt 5?

No. It has two Thunderbolt 4 / USB 4 ports at up to 40Gb/s. Thunderbolt 5 docks like the Kensington SD5000T5 work fine, but at Thunderbolt 4 speeds.

### What charger do I need to fast-charge the MacBook Air M5?

Apple says a USB-C Power Delivery charger rated at 70W or higher. The 40W adapter that comes in the box (60W max) charges it normally. A 100W GaN charger like the Anker Prime is our pick because it fast-charges the Air and still has power left for your phone.

### Do I need a hub if I buy a USB-C monitor?

Often not. A monitor with USB-C charging and built-in USB ports, like the BenQ MA320U, handles video, power and peripherals with one cable. You'll still want a small hub for travel, since the Air has no HDMI, USB-A or SD card slot.

### Is the MacBook Air M5 still the right laptop to build a setup around?

For most people, yes. It's our top pick in [our guide to the best laptops](/articles/best-laptops-2026-buying-guide/) thanks to its fast, silent M5 chip and long battery life, and with a dock and an external monitor it makes a capable desktop too.
